Doctoral-level students in the Clinical Health Psychology programs are eligible to do a practicum placement at CAPS. Students will be in good standing in the Ph.D. program in Clinical Health Psychology at UNC Charlotte. Students will have completed courses in basic counseling/clinical theory and techniques, ethics, and personality or abnormal psychology. It is also desirable that students have completed courses in multicultural counseling, research design and methods, and group therapy.
The doctoral level practicum training experience is a 16 hour per week training experience that can include the following weekly activities:
- One to two therapeutic consultation sessions per week
- Five to eight individual counseling sessions per week
- Co-leadership of a weekly structured group or workshop
- One hour of individual face-to-face supervision
- One and a half hours of weekly group supervision
- Bi-monthly full staff meetings and quarterly staff-wide trainings on diversity and inclusion (as schedules permit)

Selected applicants will be interviewed following submission of their applications. Students will be expected to participate in two consecutive semesters of practicum beginning in fall and continuing through the spring.
If you are a student interested in becoming a trainee at Counseling & Psychological Services, it is important to consider some ethical issues related to the potential for dual roles. Prospective trainees who seek counseling at CAPS should be aware that they will limit who would be available to supervise them and coordinate their training experiences. Due to the importance of avoiding multiple relationships, a Ph.D. student in either Clinical Health Psychology who would like to be a trainee at this Center will not be able to have counseling with the Practicum Coordinator or Assistant or Associate Training Directors. For the same reason, students are not eligible to receive counseling at CAPS while they are trainees here. If requested, CAPS can provide referral options to current trainees, including low-cost options if needed.
